I had taken a small outboard engine and we hired a clinker built rowing boat from the butcher in Loch Carron primarily so we could explore the loch, and pop across to the pub at Strome Ferry. Whilst there we spotted the old ferry which had been abandoned was hard aground and derelict although still fairly intact. We managed to climb aboard to explore the wreck, and gave ourselves the fright of our lives when we pulled a lever which we realised afterwards was probably a fire extinguishing system, as there was a loud bang as a pipe blew off a large cylinder and the CO2 contents emptied themselves making an incredible whooshing noise that must have been heard by anyone within a mile or so. We left in a hurry! Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664161328950208999.post-63229302765207216862013-06-22T01:50:17.418-07:002013-06-22T01:50:17.418-07:00Great read, thanks. I passed Strome Ferry a few weeks ago while on holiday in the area, nice to get a 'feel' for how it used to be.

I also remember missing a ferry & having to sleep in the car overnight. It was at Ballachulish, probably about 1965, I would have been 7. Happy memories.Hendynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664161328950208999.post-86124319264431233822011-04-23T06:05:33.085-07:002011-04-23T06:05:33.085-07:00My father was Forester for the Forestry Commission...My father was Forester for the Forestry Commission based at South Strome from 1947 to 1953 but he was also responsible for the North Strome forest.
As a result he had to cross Loch Carron frequently using the ferry and I remember going with him many times.
At that time the ferry was privately owned by George Cummings who lived in the house at the top of the North Strome pier.
We lived in Achmore and lived in three different houses during our time there, Eventually we lived in Dailfearn which was then the forester's house.
Don MscLemandonmaclhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18101369092800676444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664161328950208999.post-64214143891287083002010-05-16T14:02:16.758-07:002010-05-16T14:02:16.758-07:00Strome castle actually floated down to where she r...Strome castle actually floated down to where she rests now during a storm a good 20 maybe more years ago now. It was the same storm that moved the pride of strome further down the shore to where she now lies. At that time the hulls were intact and more or less still watertight, I think they would be in much better shape today if the mooring chains and anchors hadn't been stolen. I actually climbed onto the deck of the Pride a couple of years ago, not recommended. her back is broken and all that remains of the hull at the stern is the ribs. You can look in and see both the 3cylinder diesels. Strome castle had one 4cylinder diesel.Simonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664161328950208999.post-30818333688430971232010-04-13T15:53:28.722-07:002010-04-13T15:53:28.722-07:00In the summer of 1975, 'Pride of Strome' a...In the summer of 1975, 'Pride of Strome' and 'Strome Castle' were beached side by side at Mid Strome, where the former still lies. They were still intact with wheelhouses, although the glass was broken. My cousins and I played on the car decks and even went down inside one of the hulls. The whole experience of these abandoned vessels was slightly sinister and I can still recall the stink of grease and oil.

Both ferries were still there in 1978. By 1990 only 'Pride of Strome' was left. Does anyone know why 'Strome Castle' was removed, and where she went? (I think the vessel now lying at Drochaid Isaaic is the earlier, smaller, one.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664161328950208999.post-44203299370626928062010-04-07T13:52:57.235-07:002010-04-07T13:52:57.235-07:00I think one of the 2 car turntables was also calle...I think one of the 2 car turntables was also called STROME CASTLE aswell. I don't have any more info than that though Neil!

Hopefully someone else has a more complete list that can be of assistance!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16065674202528981889noreply@blogger.com
